An Interesting Scientific Study

Results from a recent study ranked popular sexual fetishes. Each was categorized in terms of number of participants/enthusiasts, gender biases (F, M, or neutral), and how taboo the practice was considered within the mainstream. Extrapolations of the data were eye opening, at least for me.

For our favorite fetish, the indication was that there is relatively high interest in spanking, that there are moderately more woman than men expressing interest, and that the practice is now considered only mildly taboo. I've included the link for all to consider. I'm interested in your thoughts on these findings?

I had some difficulties with the link, but found a relevant post on reddit through a search. The results seem quite interesting and even a bit surprising, especially the high interest among women. It's also interesting to see that spanking was only considered a little taboo, which was much better than I expected. Perhaps there should also have been an embarrassment scale as I sometimes feel that a spanking fetish (with all its juvenile associations) is seen as more embarrassing than an interest in more rubber-and-leather style BDSM.

Yes, very interesting. I don't find it surprising more women than men have an interest in spanking. I suspect that might have always been the case, but it's only in recent years they perhaps have felt free to express their interest. It's certainly food for thought when writing new stories.

I am not surprised at all by the studies finding that women are more likely into spanking. I have witnessed this phenomenon at Spanking Weekends, ie, Shadowlane.

I found the graph curious for what was included versus what wasn't. (One example, they include vore but don't mention chastity ? WTF? But it's not just that, I was surprised by quite a few omissions that seemed conspicuous when weighed against what someone thought WAS noteworthy.) But besides that much of it made me want to hum "My Favorite Things".

This is all quite interesting. If you go on a fetish site you will probably find the women outnumbered by a high factor, maybe five-to-one or more, and being pestered by a horde of desperate men, even more so if they declare themselves to be domme. So as a newbie you might conclude that the chances of finding any kind of partner would be poor.

But then you go on to BL and realise that because it's concerned with spanking and not the wilder extremes of BDSM and doesn't tolerate idiots, the gender balance is much more even. And if you are lucky enough to venture out to munches, especially ones which cater to spanking enthusiasts, you may well find the balance of men and women to be quite even.

The other factor I always bear in mind is that many women like to read about spanking even if they aren't active in any scene, hence the 50SOG phenomenon (There's a whole series going for next to nothing in our local bus shelter but I won't give them house room when there's so much better writing here)

It would be interesting to know the percentage of male/female members in the library. I looked in the statistics department, but couldn't find it. I tried to estimate it by picking random pages from the member list, but the member list is alphabetical by nick, and some letter combinations seem to appeal more to one sex (or should that be gender?) than the other (I found an all male page, but also a page with 16 women and only 9 men).
