I'm trying to track down a story about a young girl who wagered her future spankings over a chess game with her stepmother. Naturally she lost. The girl was adorably sassy and the author was very talented. But for the life of me I cannot find this story anywhere.

I remember that story, but I can't recall the title or the author either - now it's driving me nuts!

Reminds me of an old Swedish movie (which I have never seen except for trailers) with Max von Sydow. You know - the one where a Swedish person plays a game of chess with Death?
