This was first accredited to George Bernard Shaw when approached by a beautiful woman, my father told me that in the very early sixties.

When I glanced at Google to try to confirm GBS was the originator, I found to my surprise that the quote:
"England and America are two countries divided by a common language" is accredited to GBS- I thought it dated from much later in the 20th C.
It is well worth glancing at his famous quotes. particularly the humorous ones; nearly as good as the master of witty quips - Oscar Wilde.

You don't happen to have one of ole Albert naked do you? I would like to see if that turns into Marilyn too!

We shouldn't forget the other "master of witty quips" Mark Twain. My favourite quote is:

"If you don't read the newspaper, you are uninformed; if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed."
