I appreciated the reminder of history. I know about the market collapses; South Sea Bubble and a couple of Napoleons' UN sanctions,er.........I mean.......Ah... Continental System, etc. But I don't know about the "Tulips". Collapse of some Dutch market in history? You Brits would still be poor if the low countries were to close their doors on ya. But I REALLY think that you used this round about way to make a plug for your bankers AND most especially to get to this line: "My bankers are Hoares. Cash is always King.

switches! Grin.

Hmm the spanko civil service, now that is a plan

As to being good, nope not usually and not for very long... it gets rather boring

As well as bank holidays up here, we also have 'local' holidays. These are very local, from town to town and I never know when or why they occur!

Supposedly the cross in the Confederate flag is the Cross of St Andrews. Does make a lot of sense because of the large numbers of Scots and Scots-Irish that settled in the South in colonial times.
Defenders of Southern heritage and descendants of Confederate soldiers deplore its use by racist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, that they desecrate the flag, just like they desecrate the cross by burning it.

When Tulips were first discovered the Dutch went crazy for them. They bid up the bulbs to ridiculous levels. it got to the point where you had to decide if you want to buy a small house OR a small flower.

In a way it was like the dot com bubble - everyone knew that things were overpriced, that only a fool would pay that much for a flower, but they all assumed they could find a bigger fool to sell their tulips to. Then the market crashed and people who were rich on paper lost everything.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania for more on that crash.

"Hmm the spanko civil service, now *that* is a plan." (PinkAngel)

No, PinkAngel, sorry. I do not think that it would be a good plan to nationalize the beautiful institution of spanking. The government should not get into the business of spanking (except *possibly* the punitive spanking of criminals).

Socialism sucks. Would anyone want a "Gosspank"? Or Stalin as the "spanker-in-chief"?
