Kerr,
How incredibly frustrating--tech and those who allow us to use it are generally a pain.
I've had several external hard drives, only replacing them when storage space became a problem--its my library of vids that takes up all the space.
None of them have broken, despite being dropped on several occasions. I use "Passport" devices from Western Digital Technologies. They have enormous capacity and access can be password controlled. If not connected the computer does not flag that there is something missing, unless you try to access any content from the laptop, rather than from the drive, when it tells you that you don't have access.
In my previous posts I said that I thought they could be used to store emails etc (browsing history, bookmarks and so on). To do that I think it is necessary to put a browser on the device, so that it becomes your #2 computer. I have never tried to do that. It may not be possible. Februs would know.
