I'm listening to it now, like an old radio show, while I do computer work from the very first episode and there's been 6 to 8 spanking references so far and I'm on episode 21.

myrkassi:
Haven't spotted any spanking references yet, but I'm only about twelve episodes in...

So can anyone point out an episode with spanking references?

Maybe they have been excised?

I've been watching on the internet archive and quite a few were in the early episodes.

I've been watching it on Prime Video - twenty-six episodes in, and the nearest thing to a 'spanking reference' I've spotted is when Barnabas Collins beats Willie with his walking-stick. Are there different versions, or am I missing something?

Episode 29 contains a few references to David's father 'seeing the boy gets discipline' and the necessity of being 'very strict' if he disobeys again - the nearest to a spanking mention I've come across so far...

There is one spanking threat I remember. It takes place in the Leviathan story arc. There is a child who grows extremely fast who will become the leader of the alien Leviathans, who are basically like Lovecraft's eldritch entities. As he grows, he takes on different names and aliases to cover the true nature of his existence. When he is about 12-ish, in one episode (925, according to DS website sources), one of the adult characters, who is suspicious of him, tries to get answers and threatens to spank him, but he is stopped by someone else. I think the "put you over my knee" line was used.

There may have been one or two references/threats to the family son, David, but I can't recall exactly.

I bought the complete series on DVD from Amazon several years ago for about $300.00. Before that I was watching the series on the Science Fiction channel. I missed a lot of episodes when I switched from satellite TV to cable. Then the cable company had several delays before I could get hooked up. I watched episodes 1-399 on DVD, before deciding to take a break. For some reason I never went back to it. I recall one episode when David's father threatened to spank. BY my best recollection, the word, "spank" was actually used. The story began when Victoria Winters arrived at Collinsport to work as David's governess. While encounters with the supernatural were frequent in early episodes, the series had low ratings and was about to be canceled until a new character, Barnabas Collins, was introduced in Episode 211. Barnabas is a vampire, and the series attracted more viewers. The show ran from June 27, 1966 to April 2, 1971. The last episode was numbered 1245, but there were fewer episodes than that. Whenever an episode would be preempted (for a holiday, or some special news or sporting event.) the number would be skipped.

Evidently the version I've been watching has differently-numbered episodes; the story starts with Victoria Winters already part of the household, and the only 'supernatural encounters' are with Barnabas Collins. It's only about episode 30 or 31 that the viewers get definite evidence that Barnabas is a vampire, though it's been prettily heavily implied from his first appearances. It looks as though there's several seasons of episodes (maybe as many as 200) that I haven't seen, before the point that I thought was the beginning.

(I've just checked Wikipedia; Barnabas Collins wasn't introduced until the tenth month of the show, so the version I've been watching seems to have skipped the first nine months!)
