Goodgulf

I'm concerned that you may not be able to sustain this pace. Are you getting enough sleep? Are you eating breakfast?

On a serious note, you and kdpierre have convinced me that being a mere user, A lurker, is not appropriate on this site. The site needs participation to survive. As long as it survives my participation. I do have a mute button.

I find I'm reading fewer stories. I'm going through my favorites and my reading list and trying to comment of those stories. But there are problems. One. I read stories before I used those tools. Two. Some of those authors don't need more comments. Three. Some of the stories require a lot of thought. Four. I talk too much.

I'm old enough to have seen a lot of sites disappear. I won't use the term "die off.". This site looks like it will survive. But never assume..

I'm glad that you are concerned about my health, but in a way you are correct. All of this commenting is cutting into my writing time.

And while I am trying to comment on every story I've read, I'm not suggesting that everyone does it. But if my little project encourages anyone to comment, I'm glad of that. Getting a ratio of 10 to 1 is pretty good.

One of the reasons that this site is prospering are subscribing like us. Another reason are the book sales. Those ebooks are inexpensive and the money from those sales help pay to keep the lights on.

And those 17 comments were the last ones I owed for of Grace's. Now I'm up to 1632, up from 1464 when I started this project.

A while ago I embarked on a mission to get my V/C ratio to unity (currently 1.278). Of course I failed due to the usual reasons, slow burn serials, not really liking the story or just not being able to find the 845 pieces I'd read many years ago.

As an author I really appreciate getting comments, particularly pleasing are the ones on old stories, a few of which i have recieved only this week, so this encourages me to try to leave a word.

As an author, I am, of course, grateful for every comment I receive, and I do my best to acknowledge every one of them. However, given that there are currently 32,701 items on this site, I also greatly appreciate every reader who clicks on one of my stories, whether or not they leave a comment. Thank you.

There's another positive benefit to commenting. I look at the "Latest Comments" section on the site's homepage. Stories that others have commented on have a better chance of being worth the read. I still look up authors and use the search function. But it's nice to have another tool.

I do the same as Noah. I have certain favourite authors but then my main browsing tool is the latest comments section. A quick glance at that and I pick something that sounds interesting. Which means that helpful comments have a bit of description or clues to the setting and characters rather than just ‘I liked this’.

My main problem with commenting is what to write. I tend to get distracted and compare the action to real life, even telling how it might be solved in real life. That's where validaters step in and stop me
Another problem are serials, not to be confused with cerials.
Comment on each part or only the first and/or last.

Huge apologies because I know this has been published a number of times before but could someone please post the VCR (views to comments ratio) bands. For years I stayed as a lurker on the site but then took onboard the need of readers to comment on stories. It's certainly true that comments are welcomed and help to keep the site alive.

Since then, I've commented on 345 occasions and have now achieved a 'super commenter' rating but would love to know what I need to do to reach the next level which is 'supreme commenter'. Many thanks. E

Public Service Announcement:

I wish to make Library patrons aware that I have made a request to Library Management (or at least intend to very shortly) to have all comments made on my stories count double in computing the VCR. The rationale behind this is because... well, um... just BECAUSE. For the good of the Library or something. Therefore I strongly suggest that any member wishing to boost his/her commenting rating to spend some time commenting on my stories.

You're welcome

Perhaps I should propose a variation on this theme and ask that any comments on my stories count double towards my comment total? However, I'm not sure this would do much good since 2 x 0 = still 0.
