myrkassi: Alan Barr - I've heard that when punishment was delivered over a boy's clothed bottom, certain masters and prefects would chalk the cane, rubbing a piece of blackboard chalk along it so that when it landed across the seat of the boy's trousers or shorts it would leave a white line. this would allow the caner to adjust their aim for subsequent strokes, and leave a clear indication that the boy had just been caned. I've heard of that too. I may also have seen it depicted in an old film - not quite sure. I never heard of it happening at my school, but it seems to me it would have been a sensible and practical thing to do.

I'm not sure 'sensible and practical' would be my interpretation of it - more a way of drawing out the apprehension of the canee, preventing him from hiding that he'd just been caned, and a reminder of the caning in future. All the master or prefect would have to do to intimidate the recently-caned boy would be to pick up a stick of chalk in a significant manner...

I take your point, but I just meant it would save the same spot being caned more than once.

Wasn't there also an alternative technique in which the seat of the trousers or shorts was sprinkled with chalk dust beforehand? I rather think there was.

The cane would have knocked the chalk off, rather than putting it on.

Our music master had a different solution (not a nice man) - he used to make boys drop their trousers and pants for the cane before delivering six of the best to the bare bottom claiming it was the only way to ensure two strokes did not hit in the same place. That was his story anyway

Everyone is talking about Six-Of-The-Best and how best to allow the delinquent to savour them. What happened when there were multiple delinquents ? How much time would the headmaster need to make them happy ? Would 5 minutes per delinquent be enough ? (preparation, caning, dismissal) Would he get payed overtime ? (12 delinquents would mean 1 hour, one way to earn money )

I think it might be the film "Flirting" although I cannot be sure.
