I was wondering if others with our 'kink' get a kick out of seeing the word 'spanking' in advertisements. Here are two examples. Brand spanking new car early 1990's newspaper.
2024: A spanking new golf course. Yes, this was in a golf promotional packet, I received in the mail.

So, do other library members have more examples and what are their thoughts on this phenomenon.

For whatever reason, I feel really weirded out whenever I hear or see the word 'spanking' used outside of the actual act of spanking.

Spanking has basically ruined the word spanking for me :/

This is not the word, but the action. Back in the 90s or early naughties, ASDA over here did the ASDA price adverts - centred on keeping costs low, it ended with a last in tight green trousers, as the advert ended with the words ASDA Price she slapped er bottom twice. I watched that ad so many times when I was a young devote of spanking and often was so aroused by it, I would purposefully do something naughty to get spanked, sent to my room and soon have my knickers off exploring the after effects. If only my poor mum knew how she was getting a sore hand all those times just so I could get myself off.

Sorry, I know that is going off at a tangent but I hope it is of interest to some readers.

One of the more unusual uses in advertising that I've seen with spanking was a series of promos for one of our free to air TV networks. They used the word spanking, as in brand spanking new, to highlight their recent offerings. One of the promos featured one of their personalities; an attractive blonde woman, frolicking on a beach whilst wearing a swimsuit, when she turned around she was holding a paddle, which she slapped into her hand, while grinning mischievously at the camera, and over it the announcer spoke about their brand spanking (emphasis on the word spanking) new program line up.

In olden times, a number of liquors had pictures of youngsters getting spanked on the labels. That must have been a hundred years ago

I sometimes find the phrase 'brand spanking new' annoying, as whenever I look for spanking-related items on E-bay, Etsy or similar platforms I get dozens of offerings for things that have nothing to do with spanking.

I wonder where the phrase came from - what's the connection between something being 'brand new' and spanking?

Perry, I'm sure I've seen wine-bottle labels from Austria or Germany that depicted spankings, that were a lot less than a hundred years old!

myrkassi, the phrase comes from slapping a baby's butt immediately after birth.

I remember those Asda adverts, I always wanted to assist the young lady in applying more smacks to her bottom.

That's a lovely memory from your past.

Not just in adverts. Sports journalists here also use words caned or strokes in headlines to describe a game. Team B spanked 5-0 by team A. If a team loses 6-0 the journalists have described has six strokes of the cane, or a six stroke thrashing. I've also seen headlines about tennis players either spanking their opponent or the game described as a straight sets spanking.
