St .Comgall apparently founded the monastery but he took the austere rule from St. Fintan of Clonenagh in Co Laois. So either name, Congall or Fintan would be a good name for a strict college.
Incidentally, the recipients of the strap would have been young adults , it was a monastery not a school. However discipline with corporal punishment using the leather strap on the palm of the hand continued since the sixth century right up to the end of the twentieth century in Ireland |
