There are two things to be said here. In the second one, I am not surprised that he needed some help. In fact you and your several other willing volunteers could all have joined in the pulling of the mighty equine plonker. However, does the uncle in the second sentence merit a capital 'U'? 'Uncle Jack' could be a proper noun, but 'my uncle' is not.

You do seem to have a slightly dysfunctional family however. Cannibalism and the pleasuring of stallions would suggest a need for as more tranquil hobby.

f you feel that "Dickens' " is correct, then the use depends solely on the final letter of the word and not whether it is singular or plural. Would you say " The bus' front wheel had a puncture" ?

I don't understand some of your other comments. Why would an apostrophe make something easier to read and what could 1990s be misread as?

Would Winston have asked, " As what could 1990s be misread?"

Exciting. And since there is such disagreement within the same language, and my well-documented difficulties in separating British and American English, sadly I realize that never will I be able to produce a flawless spanking story in English...
