Many years ago I came across the quote below whilst furtively browsing a book. The sense of it remained with me but afterwards I could never remember which book it was from.
I even put a version of it into the mouth of one of my story characters.
Then a couple of months ago I found it again, copied it out exactly and saved it, but foolishly once again neglected to note the citation.
Does anyone know which book it was from? I feel that the author might have been Penny Birch but I've read a lot of her material without finding it.
