"Hollywood" has generally had a much different 'interpretation' of history (Native Americans as brutal savages, people defending slavery as heroes, colonialism benefitting the natives, etc.) than my sources, I would venture.
I've read a slight variation on your joke, with a father advising his newlywed son.
SON: I'm still getting into a lot of fights with my wife.
FATHER: Didn't you follow the advice I gave you?
SON: You mean to take down her panties (knickers) and spank her hard on the bare bottom?
FATHER: Yes, that's what I do with your mother when she's argumentative.
SON: That never works for me.
FATHER: Why not?
SON: Once I get her panties (knickers) down, I'm not upset with her anymore.
