I believe I read some years ago about a time when Italy was forming as a nation. It stated that there were barrels, cut in half lengthwise fastened in the city squares. Women and men of quality that opposed unification were taken there, tied over the barrels, their bottoms undraped to everyone's view and whipped in public! They were then left there for some time as a message to any who opposed unification.
Maybe my understanding of barrel-making mechanics is faulty, but if you cut a barrel in half lengthwise would it not just fall apart? Nevertheless, it is a lovely image.
