It's also worth reflecting that warmongers are not necessarily stupid. If you accept their basic premises and view of human nature and what matters, then their actions can be well-calculated risk. So the problem is deeper than stupidity.

This is very well put. There may be situations where it is morally justified to go to war, either to defend oneself or to defend others too weak to defend themselves, but all too often such interventions are actually motivated by quite different concerns. Also, while it is right to commemorate the soldiers who paid the ultimate price doing what they thought was right, it should also be remembered that the brunt of the suffering is usually borne by civilians in the afflicted areas.

True - its estimated that 80+% of casualties in any modern war are unarmed civilians. I do think our attitude to war is changing, though, because we have better information. In past wars the public had to rely on officially-censored news reports for information, so war was depicted as a glorious adventure. Once film cameras could show the reality, that attitude had to change. Now we can have real-time broadcasts from warzones, so the 'official' view can be constantly checked and challenged, if necessary.
People are, on the whole, less likely to believe what they're told by the authorities if they can check the facts for themselves.
