I was taught singing at the R.S.A.M.D, now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and never experienced anything like this! Yes, there was some touching - mainly the rib-cage, the diaphragm, the upper chest and the shoulders. This was to show you which parts of the body should move and which should not when breathing properly. I find it hard to believe that these young men didn't find anything odd about this man's approach to teaching.
