One of my favorite authors is Neil Gaiman (Coraline, American Gods, Stardust, The Sandman comic book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and much more.) I recently bought The Graveyard Book, a story about a boy who is raised by ghosts in a graveyard after he is orphaned. A couple that was childless while they were alive, Mr. and Mrs. Owens adopt him, and name him Nobody Owens. he is called Bod by the ghosts who reside in the graveyard. At one point Bod leaves the graveyard, something he is forbidden to do, and gets himself in danger. Afteer he is rescued, he is punished by Mr. Owens. Neil Gaiman's description of it follows: "Mr. and Mrs. Owens had died several hundred years before it was decided beating children was wrong, and Mr. Owens had, regretfully, that night, done what he saw as his duty, and Bod's bottom stung like anything." |
