Re the witchcraft tral in the 1940s - I believe it was political. If I remember rightly the accused was a society spiritualist who was making uncomfortably accurate predictions about the course of the war. She was suspected of worming classified information out of some of her clients by means of 'seances'. Since it couldn't be proved, the 'witchcraft' charge was a means of shutting her up.

Being, apparently, the only person on this site from Alabama (hard to believe, I know), I find it my duty to defend her. We may have some crazy laws, but I searched for this one for a good fifteen minutes. I found it for Arkansas, but not for Alabama.
We have enough of a bad rap already as it is.
