That tax loophole thingy used to apply in the UK, and I remember about the time of my parents' 25th anniversary in '79 hearing how many folk were also having 25th anniversaries at that time (lots of requests for songs on the radio). In a time of shortening marriages it seemed that the financial incentive to get married was actually quite a strong one, though it might have just been indicative of the type of people who were more likely to stick together. |
