I've written a couple of fantasies regarding prolonged use of "in loco parentis" when the age of majority was 21, but I doubt that there has been much if any use this century. I think it makes a fascinating story, but has to be at least partially consensual.
In reality the early women students had to be so strong willed and determined that it is inconceivable that they would have acceded unless they wanted to anyway-I've met a good few nonagenarian blue-stockings-a formidable breed!
In the early days of Cambridge and Oxford when they were religious establishments, I believe floggings of undergrads occurred similar to monastic discipline.
Cambridge was single sex until well into the last (20th) century-the ladies colleges were not properly part of the university -the relationship was complex. Discipline was enforced by its own "police force"- and large scale fights between town and gown occurred in the nineteenth century. The beadles even had the right to send back prostitutes who came up from London on the Friday afternoon trains(to service the wealthy undergrads) and prevent them from entering Cambridge.
I must emphasise that I'm no expert I only came to Cambridge to work and live nearby, and occasionally observe the antics of the students, and the splendid bottoms of many female students.
After talking to a South Korean young lady (a highly qualified graduate professional) however, it would not surprise me at all if CP was practised on them up to recent years, she stated that it was commonplace in their schools, and she had been caned on more than one occasion. She also stated that girls were forcibly held down by prefects if they didn't accept the punishment. We agreed that discipline was the reason the far-east was doing so well and why the west was falling behind. |
