I think that all the stories I have read where this piece of apparatus is used the purpose is to increase the degree of punishment, yet in real life it appears to have an erotic function. I do not see the use of ginger root included in the real life practices. Is it?

Ginger is incredibly overrated in spanking stories. Something like Capsaicin on the other hand is incredibly effective in effecting a strong reaction from the person it's being applied to.

Since, according to the references capsaicin is used to discourage elephants I would imagine that it would be quite effective. Effective too in ending a relationship I would think, or it should be. I cannot imagine anyone willingly accepting 'treatment' with such.

Well it can also be used for arthritis and other aches and pains relief. You can buy tubes of it from Walgreens, and I can attest to the fact that their product isn't quite elephant strength, but it still can introduce a pretty good heat into your seat. Fresh ginger peeled and put in as a plug can be quite stimulating, even more so when a spanking is given.
