According to my Dictionary of Slang, 'rogering' has meant fucking "since early C.18 (?earlier)... from the name of Roger, frequently given to a bull". No mention of buggery.

Hence, possibly, the classic limerick:

There was a young lady called Todd
Who believed that her child came from God.
But it wasn't the Almighty
Who lifted her nightie
But Roger the lodger - the sod!

The Flashman books by George MacDonald Fraser, which were predominantly set between 1840 - 1900 often mentioned 'rogering'. In fact mention is made of giving someone a 'good rogering'.

When I first heard this song by Mel Tillis, I didn't 'get it'.

Hey baby, let me see your brand new saddle
Let's get that pretty thing up on my horse
Let's get it on real tight now
'Cause we don't want you falling off

Well, I got the horse and she got the saddle
We like to ride side by side
Aw, I got the horse and she got the saddle
Together we're gonna ride, ride, ride...

Remember all of the references from Shakespeare using a variety of terms for a fish to refer to a penis as in Romeo and Juliet, when Mercrutio says, here comes Romeo without the Roe, calling him gay. I taught my students to look for those types of euphemisms, cautiously as I was teaching in what is known as America's Bible Belt. They learned to love Shakespeare.

I wonder how you can do that cautiously!

Shakespeare really wrote for the common people. It's hard for us to find it, because language is so different now, but if you know what to look for a lot of his work is very risque.

No mention of buggery.

Perhaps you need to treat yourself and get a more comprehensive dictionary then Phil!!

PS Found this on wikipedia!!

From c.1650 to c.1870 Roger was slang for the word "penis" probably due to the origin of the name involving fame with a spear.[3][4][5] Subsequently, "to roger" became a slang verb form meaning "to have sex with/ to penetrate", often particularly referring to anal sex.

Roger-the lodger was probably a sodomite!

There is a seen from the movie Something About Mary where an English fellow states "I would give Mary a good Rogering"! We all know exactly what he is talking about.

What, pray-tell, does this say about the late, beloved TV show host Mr. Rogers? I always suspected there was something funny going on beneath those nerdy, v-necked sweaters!
