blimp:
life is full of near misses!
...along with the occasional bulls eye!
That's a great thought to start my day with Blimp.
I don't believe I've contributed to this thread yet, but when I grew up any adult who was known to my parents represented an alternate authority figure. In practice, that meant any adult on my street, in our church, in my extended family or my family's circle of friends. That is very unlike today! Virtually all of those folks I mentioned knew my name and might stop whatever I was doing to correct my behavior, forcefully if necessary. I don't remember any of them actually spanking me, but the idea certainly wasn't beyond the realm of possibility. The biggest danger was what they might tell my parents, which is probably why I paid little attention to adults outside that circle I mentioned.
As I said, today is much different. I barely look at the children growing up on my street for fear their parents will think I'm a sexual predator. They don't know my name, and I don't know theirs. That's not to say that I'm unfriendly, I'm just not a factor in their lives. Fear of pedophiles is just one factor that has caused this erosion of neighborhood life; dangerous streets, plus television, air conditioning, video games, and information technology in general have all combined to keep families inside their homes.
