When I was young we normally hung out stockings for Santa Claus to fill on Christmas Eve. However some kids we knew hung up a pillow case! We thought that was just plain greedy!

Similar situation with the custom of Halloween "begging". Some kids use a paper sack or small plastic pumpkin for their candy collection, but a few greedy ones arrive with a pillow case.

(BTW: In California, there has evolved a much more civilized Halloween practice. Parents always accompany their children rather than letting them go wild. Parents carry an empty wine glass that is refilled at some homes. It turns Halloween into a genteel neighborhood event. Everybody wins!)

Wait! Hold on there! In the movie Jeepers Creepers, wasn't Darry (Justin Long) carrying his stuff home in a pillowcase on the back seat of his sisters car? I believe it was.

Guy:
erhaps the pillow-case as luggage idea comes from the old gunny sack?

Didn't Johnny B Goode put his guitar in a gunny sack according to Chuck Berry?

he carried his guitar in a gunny sack
and sit beneath the trees by the railroad track
livin' in the trees sittin' in the shade
strumming to the rhythm that the drivers made
the people passin' by they'd stop and say
Oh my how that little country boy can play
Go, Go...

A little historical note. When Chuck Berry wrote that song the original lyric said "Oh my how that little colored boy can play". He changed it because he thought that with the racism in the South the sales would be affected.
