I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned the Cane Toad. A very appropriate creature to this site. Not only does it have a thick hide, its venom produces watering of the eyes and stinging skin in the recipient. Sounds rather like the after effects of a good caning, if you ask me!

Seegee:
Anyone know why they chose that particular hunting cat?

I would imagine it is because they are sleek, single minded and very beautiful, Seegee. In films they are often dressed in animal prints with sleek lines that hug their figure. Men appear to favor such fashion- you know-the wild woman. I rather like the entire concept- this new species of women who break all the rules evolving before our eyes.

That's true Carol, but cats like tigers and leopards have it all over the cougar on all those fronts.

I named my cat Fido because he is always barking up the wrong tree. People seem to think I'm nuts but they're all crazy. And very dull.

Fido is an adopted bobcat, incidentally ...

Cougers are quite cool, literally and figuratively. I know!

That may be true, or may not, however if this saying originated in Canada as someone brought out, we have no tigers or leopards over here to compare a cougar to, so that is likely why that particular cat was used.

In my mind, pitting one animal against the other, I would not like to bet on the outcome, both have strengths that they put to good use.

In a fight between most cats I'd back the tiger, they're bigger and stronger than pretty much all the others. A lion could give one a run for it's money, and while they're not as big leopards are incredibly strong.
