I had to rethink this and I guess my real question to the other non-commenting 97.23 readers has to be: what didn't you like about the story?

I've no complaints about the comments I receive. I treasure each one. The quantity isn't important, although I would sometimes like the opportunity to join in the thread. But I am happy to accept that isn't the LSF way.

However, I don't read that many stories by other authors here. As a rule, I only read stuff I consider might be a turn-on. Occasionally, I read a story for its literary reputation or because some aspect has me intrigued, but that's pretty rare. A lot of rollin's list applies for me...

Everyone missed the heading, which should have probably been TOP TEN.

I receive some great comments from people who bother to comment. There are those who take the stories a bit too serious, but I make those comments every once in a while, too. I don't particularly care for stories that contain a male or female who is overly abusive just for the sake of being in control of everything. However, all the rest of the story is so well written that I have to make a comment on at least that part, too.

I don't think I've ever written something that hurt someone's feelings. "Wow, you're a real hack. Damn, keep your day job! I have a five year old who writes better! Commas and periods are our friends, fool! I want ten minutes of my life back for that 12,000 word alphabet soup you wrote!

Now those are hurt feeling comments.

I believe there are some people who live by a certain rule they were taught a long time ago.

"If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

In one of the other excuses written, maybe someone did start to read and didn't bother to finish. In that case it's probably good they didn't comment. There are those who read a serial and comment only on the last part listed. A comment is a comment. I'll take them as they come.

I never could type.

bendover:

Absolutely! So do I! I always express my appreciation too.

rollin:
I don't read that many stories by other authors here

Neither do I, given the amount of time I spend here. I do, however, comment on about a third of them. I feel no compulsion to comment on EVERY story I read. Many of the reasons I don't, when I don't, were enumerated by rollin.

AlanBarr:
even if they read without commenting, I'm still grateful and wouldn't dream of insulting them!

Oops! My bad! I guess it just slipped out. Sorry everyone! I didn't mean to offend.

flopsybunny:
If I was a non commenter and read the above I think I'd dig in my heels

Given all the prodding done previously, I'd say that most of them have ALREADY dug their heels in.

Redskinluver:
Some of those are intereting excuses, if pretty lame.

Ya think?

Redskinluver:
It is true about other sites where no one comments though. As a writer, I know. And yes, call it ego, but it is discouraging

I agree. that's one of the things that's so great about the LSF. In all the discussion about people who don't comment, we forget to acknowledge the couple dozen who comments religiously and the hundreds who comment occasionally (and much more frequently than is common elsewhere). THANK YOU!!!

flopsybunny:
we know NJRick didn't really mean to insult people

Of COURSE not. I wouldn't DREAM of it. Well, ok, so maybe I do dream of it OCCASIONALLY. That doesn't mean I would act on those dreams. At least not very often. Come to think of it, I'm USUALLY pretty nice. Particularly when threatened with a visit to Miss Thrashbottom.

Februs:
n the past we had numerous idiots

See? I'm not the ONLY one to use that word.

In my own defense, I only posted this topic as a bit of fun. I'm done debating whether there should be more comments, or what we (with "we" meaning "Februs") should do about people who don't comment. We have a great core of members here who make the LSF a truly wonderful, interactive place. And I think it's great that there are a bunch of others who read my stories, even if I never hear from them.

"If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

I usually go by that rule also, unless I have what I think is constructive criticism. Sometimes I read a story and find it's not to my taste. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad story. Someone with slightly different tastes may think it's great. In that case, I just don't comment.

But if I read hundreds of stories and couldn't find anything nice to say about any of them, I'd give up and not waste my time reading more.

Now, how about excuses for not READING stories. I'll start: "The title sounded intriguing, like something I might want to write about. But I won't steal someone else's scenario, so every story I read is one I can't write."

how about excuses for not READING stories

My main excuse for not reading stories is that 99.5% of the authors on here write much better then me, and it makes me crazy wondering why my stories are not as good.

On the other hand that is also the main reason WHY I DO READ stories, hoping i can learn enough to get along. Also in hopes some magical genie will jump out of my computer and make me a great and wonderful writer one night, (at least until midnight.)

Now, how about excuses for not READING stories.

Or how about excuses for not WRITING stories? I've got plenty of 'em!

a) I'm too busy reading and posting on the Forum
b) That idea is a SEQUEL to an earlier story (God forbid!)
c) (picking up on jbeverly's theme) Somebody else beat me to it.
d) I have writer's block again (waaah! poor me!)
e) That idea is just too weird. (of course, this never stopped flopsy, now did it? Spanked with a fish, you say?)
f) If people won't give me thirty comments a pop, then they don't deserve my stories

CS, I find that statement so very inaccurate. You're a tremendous writer. Your last challenge story was fantastic. 99.5 is way to high and, as a matter of fact, there is no percentage at all. As a verbal spanking from me to you, I'd rather not hear you say that again. Got it!!!???

By the way, I also enjoy your comments as does every other author I'm sure. I think many of the authors will agree on what I've said above.
