10) I'm new to the site and still getting used to it

9) No other sites care whether anyone comments

8) I can't figure out how to leave a comment

7) Most other people don't comment either

6) I really don't want to say anything negative that might hurt someone's feelings

5) When I reach 500 stories, I'll just re-register under a different name

4) Other people have already said pretty much everything I would say

3) I don't write well enough to make a worthwhile critique

2) I don't want anybody to know about my kink

And the number one excuse given for not commenting:

1) I'm rude, unappreciative, and an idiot.

No, wait, how'd that one get in here? It's NEVER given as an excuse. It's just most often the truth.

Some of those are intereting excuses, if pretty lame.
It is true about other sites where no one comments though. As a writer, I know. And yes, call it ego, but it is discouraging. To go to the effort and not know if anyone even bothered to read it.

4000 comments in one month are still not enough?

I think that's a bit out of order, Rick. I'd prefer people to comment, obviously, but even if they read without commenting, I'm still grateful and wouldn't dream of insulting them!

I don't think the number of comments is the point. Let us presume that out of 10,000+ members that 6000 are active participants in the Library. If we could get 1 comment from each active member in any one month, we can see the 4000 comments would be easily topped.

Is 1 comment per member per month too much to ask? I don't think so. If everyone gave 1 comment a month it would also likely keep everyone within the prescribed ratio of 1:500 rule.

In addition there are likely at least 100 viewers who comment a lot more, some comment on almost every story they read. If the ones that comment more continue to do so, and there is no reason to think they would stop, we can easily see comments in the 8 to 10 thousand range every month.

So yes, 4000+ was a great thing to see, and as a writer I benefited from that, but the possibilities are much more then what we see now.

If I was a non commenter and read the above I think I'd dig in my heels, put on my obstinate head, and stubbornly refuse to comment on principle!

However, we know NJRick didn't really mean to insult people, and after a visit to Miss Thrashbottom's study he'll be walking about with a giant bag containing 4,000 frozen peas strapped to his rump.

4,000? He must have a pretty big rump

I hate to say this, but there are some pretty valid reasons for not commenting too.

1. The story wasn't to my liking
2. After reading the first 2 paragraphs I had no desire to continue
3. I've read 100's of stories just like this one
4. It was too harsh
5. It was too light
6. It was all about kids
7. There were no kids in it
8. It was nothing but spanking
9. There was only one spanking and it was way at the end
10. No sex in it
11. It was too sexy

I could go on and on. But here is what intrigues me about behavior. I guess you could say I've been pretty successful here, but as they say on ESPN "let's go to the video tape."

I have a CRR (comment to read ratio) of 2.77%. This means that out of every 100 views, on average, I get 2.77 comments or 1 comment for every 36 views. Is this good? No. I think it ought to higher, like 1 in 10 or 15 views. But the thing I'll never know is whether the reason for such a terrible batting average is due to the reasons listed by njrick or the ones I put up. Obviously it's both, but where the spread is, I have no clue.

I'm not sure how useful the views count actually is as in the past we had numerous idiots who would flick through hundreds of stories in a very short space of time without actually attempting to read any of them. This causes numerous problems, one of which is distorted info on how many people have actually read anything. Hopefully, it should become less of a factor in the future as we are now taking active steps to block the accounts of those who continue to flick in this way on a continuous basis or repeatedly ignore requests not to copy submissions.
