Some authors need this to feel happy.

Some authors probably do, but how would we find the right ones?

JessicaK:
(Side question, prompted by Katie B's latest: why is there a trans-Atlantic difference between humor/humour, color/colour, but it's glamour in both variants?)

As far as I know, the spelling of "-our" words in British English was influenced by French spelling, whilst the efficient Americans dropped the 'u' in these words to simplify, and perhaps to set themselves apart. I hadn't realised 'glamour' was an exception, but perhaps its very meaning was the reason for it keeping its 'u', giving it a hint of European sophistication?

those seven that get excluded from the Top Fifty, the the utter humiliation of their authors

Absolutely! Coming in the last seven would prove that you were a misunderstood genius rather than a shallow crowd-pleaser.

As the only self-acknowledged last-place winner in one of the challenges, I can vouch for this as the proper attitude in reaction to such a finish. Unfortunately, the emphasis society places on "winning" makes abject humiliation the more likely result.

So, why not ask Februs to list the last six instead of the first six? That would leave 51 authors with the hope to be on the top.

Shall I tell you?

The bottom 7 could always be dealt a sound caning. I'm sure that would make many of them very happy!

I have read all of the stories and voted on them. I have commented on most of them. It wasn't that difficult. Of course, I have laundry backed up and some of my bills are late being paid and I haven't cooked in several days, but that's just fine, because I need to do the dishes too. Today was a holiday, July 4th so I wouldn't have worked anyway. I will say, the entries were excellent and I enjoyed the variety of approaches to the challenge.
Congratulations to all of you for your work. I envy your talent for writing.

Ahhh...I knew I was something but until you wrote this, I was never sure. A misunderstood genius, I like that very much thank you.

And yes Jools, a sound caning would be OK, although I much perferred the otk position and a good paddle.

The only reason I asked about listing the top 10, was so more challenge stories continue to be read after the competition closes. After closing date only the top six seem to be read repeatedly and the others fall into pretty much instantaneous oblivion just like other long forgotten stories no longer on the first few pages of the latest loaded list.
