Cute! The Queen's randomly appointed public servant "Governor" couldn't do much worse than the mess we have in Washington today. The current laughable crop of presidential hopefuls running in our primary elections offer us little hope for the future.

I think it is an offer they can't refuse! Now we shall return back to the good old days! When Queen Victoria was on the throne a third of the world was reassuringly pink! Which reminds me of that Leonard Cohen song! He called her "the mean governess of those huge pink maps" but then he is an American so what do you expect? Never grateful! After all we have done for them too!

Do you have punishment under the white lace,
Will you be short with her and will you make her
read those little bibles. Will you spank her with a
mechanical corset.

Oh, yes, that message from the Queen was going the rounds a few years back (after Dubya was re-elected). Fun, but we could be inviting trouble from the Romans.

Leonard Cohen is a knowledgeable guy, but I suspect he was going on stereotypes about Queen Victoria. She wasn't particularly strait-laced for her time and confided in various people that the joys of sex with Prince Albert were really quite something. She was politically conservative (what a surprise) but completely free of racism or similar nasty traits, remarking favourably on Disraeli's having overcome the undoubted barriers to a Jew becoming Prime Minister, and getting rather close to an Indian servant in her later years (that was after she reached out to someone even more beyond the pale and had a probable dalliance with Scottish servant John Brown, which itself was after Albert's untimely death, which certainly reduced the joy and positivity in her character).

Yes, I suspect you are right. However I love the line "do you have punishment under the white lace"! It makes you almost purr with pleasure. Whatever we may say about the Americans they have produced some amazing songwriters over the years. And the Canadians too of course!

Actually, as Phil K indicated, Leonard Cohen is indeed Canadian, but he is also American. From North America. Where Canada (and the US) both reside. The problem seems to be that no one has figured out how to say someone is from the United States, without sounding too clumsy or using too many words (e.g. I'm a United States citizen? I'm from the United States? I'm a United States-ian?) So, everyone from the US just says "I'm American." Which we are. But so are a lot of other non-US people, like Canadians, Mexicans, Guatamalans, Brazilians (some are Central and South Americans, but still Americans) etc. Who are probably just a little teed off that only people from the US are considered "Americans."

Though when they see the nutty and smarmy politicians we have here in the US, they may be a little less teed off, because who wants to be associated with them?

Not sure where I was going when I started writing all this, but I think I've arrived.

Not sure where you're getting your 'facts' from, Blimpy-bum, but LC was born in Montreal, Quebec, which was and still is (despite the best efforts of the Quebecois separatists) part of Canada, and has never renounced his Canadian citizenship. Sure, as Smeple points out, that makes him a North American - but are you seriously trying to tell us that's what you meant?

Naah. You thought he was from the US, didn't you, Blimpy? Course you did. And in future please remember!! No one respects an ignoramus who won't admit his ignorance!
