I think in many of the cases Sebastian is describing the authors may simply have lost interest and moved on to other things and what they wrote 10 or more years ago is no longer of concern to them.

Also very common. If this site had not appeared I might have never written again after I quit in 2003.

This is truly a sad situation but I suppose there are reasons, Flopsy. I've always thought it quite unforunate that a small tight knit community such as ours could not seem to easily and amicably interact but that appears to be the case. Who knows why? I once loved going to Deja and surfing through the usesnet archives, which now seem to have vaporized. Almost criminal, historically speaking. Thanks, Google. <sigh>

I couldn't agree more and have ranted about it numerous times, including elsewhere on here. The most annoying part of it is you can tell, technically speaking, that the problems Google have introduced with the newsgroups could very easily be fixed which leaves one with the conclusion that they either aren't interested in fixing them or are deliberately choosing not to. Either way it's extremely frustrating, but they're Google and will do as they please (including de-indexing our site URL along with 11 million others).
