Oooh, vacillate is a very nice word - There's a novel called The Vacillations of Poppy Carew isn't there?

The American Thesaurus of Slang has "hem and haw" as one of the variants of BE IRRESOLUTE.

Goodgulf:
It's truly an obscure word
Oddly enough, it's a very common word in Scots, though the meaning is different. It means to talk nonsense, as in, "Stop yer havering, lassie!"

Exactly!
And to us, 'blethering' is chatting about nothing in particular. "I didn't phone for anything special - just fancied a blether."
Ain't language wonderful?

'Blethering' is one of my favourite verbs of all time, but only when pronounced in an authenticating Scottish accent.! As Linda says, in Gallic paraphrase, language is a "grand merveil"!

Sorry is it "blethering"? It is a long time since I studied "The Broons" and "Oor Wullie"!
