Seeking guidance on 'Em' and 'En' dash rendering?

I'm far from being an expert on punctuation (or grammar), but I tried with my latest story submission to use 'En' and 'Em' dashes suitably. I send stories in plain text, using Notepad, and found it fairly convenient to insert these dashes using Character Map. I used 'Em' dashes in pairs without separating spaces e.g.

'No one—not even the president—should have known.'

I spaced 'En' dashes (perhaps not correctly) e.g.

'Once more Alice missed the bus – for the third day in a row.'

Once loaded though, either sort of dash seems to be rendered as a hyphen.

I thought I might try (using hyphens):

'Gerry Baxter--hero of the moment--hurried to the rescue.' ('Em' dashes)

'Alice overslept - just like the day before.' (Spaced hyphen for 'En' dash)

I'd like to know if there's an LSF standard approach? (I've just used spaced hyphens for both in previous stories and not worried about it!) Thanks!

We automatically parse out any non-ascii characters, including both em- and en-dash characters, prior to loading, in this particular case replacing both with a single hyphen. Double hyphens get parsed to a single hyphen also.

Thank you for clarifying. I'll put away the character map and carry on as before! Best wishes RV
