When I include a link or a link to an image in a post, I get to see the markup and not the actual image.
What am I doing wrong ?

eg:

[imgs=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/801/bookworthy.gif/]Bookworthy[/imgs]

That one works. Maybe your link is bad?
