I hear what you are saying Leslie and I think much depends on how each individual has subconsciously fetishised the implement, and the scenario of where and how the punishment takes place. For some it is based on what they have experienced personally and for others it is what they would like to experience personally.

I find many of the American writers better at domestic scenes than institutional ones, and the Brits vice versa. Though I have to admit that I often view US school paddlings in a more domesticated than institutional light, which I know is contradictory.
