At the risk of boring everyone to death, the Internet Explorer web browsers are a nightmare for most programmers for a number of reasons but primarily their inability to adhere to agreed programming standards, they also tend to exhibit a number of flaws and unfortunately each one tends to have a different set of flaws. The typical programmer's experience is to code something to agreed web standards, find it looks just fine in Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari etc but totally screwed up when displayed in IE. Almost every part of the library site has had to be substantially rewritten to display and work correctly with IE6 and IE7 but at that point I've drawn the line. I've no plans to install IE8 or IE9 so if you find things either look screwy or simply don't work in the latest IE, whatever that might be, then I'm afraid to say I won't be attempting to fix it. There are no shortage of much better web browsers freely available and with better functionality and I'd recommend using one of those.

I just down loaded Firefox and it took five minutes. Whatever it takes, I'll use it. I had already downloaded Google Chrome, as well. I might even download Opera and Safari, and pick the best for me for the library.

I used to have problems with IE, I downloaded Firefox and surprise, surprise they went away! Ever since I've gotten a Mac and used Safari I've never had any issues with it. Sebastian Safari is designed for Macs, I'm not even sure you can get it work on a PC.

For me, either IE8, chrome or firefox works well, except for the symbols on content for IE8. For me, I don't download programs, so they work. Use whats easiest and best. Whatever works.

On the basis of Februs' comments I am exploring Chrome - as I am also soon to buy the HTC Desire PDA which should be compatble. Can you run two browsers together on my one (new) PC or will I have to take the plunge and abandon IE (8) after 15 years of satisfaction (albeit in ignorance!) with IE ?
Some guidance appreciated please

You can run several browsers on one computer... I use ie, (when Febs isn't looking) Chrome and ff, sometimes all at the same time, no probs.

You can install as many browsers as you want on a pc - I have to install most of them to make sure any site that I'm building looks OK in all the different browsers. Really, Microsoft should never have embedded a web browser (IE) into their operating system (Windows), apart from being anti-competitive it means the operating system is less stable and much less secure which is one of the reasons why Windows users are subject to so many vulnerabilities and exploits. I'm led to believe that people buying a new pc in Europe now have an option which browser to use when installing Windows but apparently that's not the case in the US.

If the site works fine when using IE 8.0 and you like it then by all means stick with it and the same applies for IE9.0 but if there are problems with either of these versions of IE then I just wanted people to know that I don't have either of them installed nor any plans to install them at a future date so and won't be fixing any problems with them.

Personally, I prefer Firefox, I just like the feel of it and I also find invaluable a number of the add-ons available for it, especially Adblock Plus which I really couldn't do without. It also has numerous things which make my life easier when coding. I like Chrome too and find it especially fast.

Very many thanks for your time. Feel a happier bunny (especially with a lug net)
Yes, I did have a browser choice on new HP Touchsmart - but ignored it: it's bad enough with learning nuances of Win 7 and Office 2010. Only had it a month tho' . Will try Chrome first.
