For quite a while now I have been tinkering about with some code that would show the VCR (views to comments ratio) for library uses in a graphical format rather than just as a boring old, "You have a VCR of x". It's not something essential to the well-being of the site but provides a diversion from the endless loading of stories and so forth...

Anyway, in the process I created some banding for the VCR values to determine how they broke down and thought I would share the findings which are quite interesting. Values shown are the VCR band and the number of people who fall into it.

>500 :: 110
500 - 250 :: 598
250 - 100 :: 474
100 - 50 :: 247
50 - 25 :: 193
25 - 10 :: 240
10 - 5 :: 111
less than 5 :: 133
never commented :: 8620

The really interesting stat is that out of 10,725 members 8,620 have never made a single comment, that's just over 80%. Anyway, thought I would share the data ... if you're going to respond do please keep on topic.

Wow, that is amazing and also strangely disturbing! I wonder how many of those are active... I guess a good portion have to be!!

As I said in the forum on Njrick's comment about excuses. If we consider 50% of those who never commented are active members. that would mean 4,310 are on site likely once a month at least. If these ones would make 1 comment a month, and the rest of us continued as we are, then the current top number of comments at a little over 4000 would fall like a rock in the ocean. We could be getting comments in the 7 to 8 thousand range easy in any month, how nice that would be.

Great work Februs, I have often wondered how VCR ratio's were as a group but never thought you had the time to do the work. Thanks for the info.

Do you know how many stories the non-commenters read in average? I could imagine that there are many people who try two or three stories and then never come back. So it would be more interesting to know how many non-commenters read more than 100, 200, 500 or 1,000 stories. Another influencing factor might be how frequently a reader is using the library. I would think that regular readers are more willing to comment than sporadic readers. And there might be members who read many stories in the first year, but not the last two years, when the 500 story-rule was introduced.

As far as I noticed there are normally 500 members per day online and about 3.000 viewed stories per day. If you deduct the authors who just check their comments there might be 250-300 regular readers who are possible commenters. This numbers given I think a rate of 100 comments/day is not so bad.

It's been a long time since we had less than 600 members on a day... usually closer to 700 these days.

Stop trying to find more work for me to do .. Will see what I can come up with anyway...

update - non-commenter stats:

50 or less: 5769
50 - 100: 869
100 - 200: 827
200 - 500: 835
500 - 1000: 267
over 1000: 51

I obviously go to bed too early.

I thought that pleases you

So there are only about 1,000 pathological non-commenters.

I've just checked and my VCR ratio is 14/1, which is terrible. Being a new greenhorn author I can now appreciate people taking time to comment, and it encourages you to carry on writing.
I solemnly swear to the spanking Gods I will comment more.
That's got me thinking, i wonder who the Gods of spanking would be.

Well the long-awaited VCR-o-Meter is finally here although I have to say it might not work on all of the various weird and wonderful varieties of web browser out there (I know it doesn't show in Opera for example). So, assuming you've made at least 1 comment clicking the "My Comments" button should now bring up an animated gauge showing your VCR along with your own 'comment ranking' which can be any of the following:

sloth commenter
sluggish commenter
occasional commenter
active commenter
grand commenter
super commenter
supreme commenter
commenting deity

And before anyone debates the metrics it's all intended merely to provide a bit of amusement...
