We have recently noticed that submissions which have been written using Word 2010 appear to be missing spaces when opened in earlier versions of Word. None of the library admins use Word 2010 so if you are using Word 2010 could you please save your submissions in RTF format for now while I investigate further. Thanks.

I was notified that my latest story, which is written with Word 2010, appeared to be without spaces. I have now saved it as a Word 97 - 2003 file and resubmitted it. Will this file type work for you?

Both the rtf and Word 97 - 2003 file formats appear to be fine. I notice others have reported the same problem:

That's rather bad that that happens! One would think that Microsoft would be able to make all MS Word programs compatible with each other! . Oh well, at least we users of Word 2010 have couple of file types to use as an alternative! By the way, before I saw your reply I resent the story to you in Rich Text Format (which I guess stands for RTF), so sorry for the double-up. hehe!

Personal experience suggests that Microsoft appear incapable of producing quality software. I'd also never assume that more recent versions of anything they produce are less buggy than previous versions.

(sigh) After many years of stable computing with XP, I finally switched computers and am now stuck with Windoze 7. Since that day, I've had constant issues with word processing software. Not surprisingly, the Word 10 that came shipped with my computer is the only Word Processor I've found that seems to work seamlessly. My old MS Office Suite won't even load, Word Perfect works but is buggy, and the same for Open Office. I even tried the Google on-line document processor and had issues that drove me to distraction. Now you tell me that Word 10 isn't even working!

What I have been doing lately is pasting my stories directly from Word 10 into Gmail, rather than sending as an attachment. Has that been working OK or have I been causing someone extra work?

If you're stuck with using Word 2010 all you need to do is save a copy of your document in either RTF format or Word 97 - 2003 format and send that to us instead. Pasting the text into gmail is OK so long as you haven't used any italics. If you're experiencing a whole heap of problems with Word then why not use Open Office instead. Personally I opt for anything that doesn't involve Microsoft, that includes operating system as well as word processor.

I would love to! Unfortunately, I've found the Win7 version of OO too buggy to use. Perhaps eventually.

Personally I copy and paste to notepad and send in text files. This way I don't risk forgetting to delete the meta data from the file (real name, organisation, etc).

I've long thought a better business model for Microsoft would be to make the software free and charge for the patches.
