Melinda George, out of a failed marriage at 37, is pushed by her younger friend Kay into applying for a post at the Marchmont Collection of historical documents concerning 'the regulation of women's behaviour'. Her first task is to assess pages of a journal kept by the young Mistress of Enderby Hall in the early seventeen hundreds. The first pages of the journal tell how Jane at nineteen is pursued by Sir John Masterton; he spanks her and, surprisingly aroused, she submits to his advances and accepts his proposal of marriage. He sets up an irregular household which includes Jane bedding him and also her companion Molly, and he orders a punishment bench with instruments to establish a new disciplinary regime. There are parallels with the past as Melinda participates in the current disciplinary regime of Enderby Hall, accepts the proposal of marriage from the Master, and enjoys sexual liaisons with him and also with her female friends.
