Harriet Maynard, an elderly nurse at the Red Hills Girls' Academy, reminisces about times past. A member of staff called Miss Sloan reminds her of a sadistic woman from her past called Gerda. Her mind drifts back to her first encounter with Gerda, and the cruel disciplinary regime she witnessed during her years in Rhodesia. Employed as a nurse in a reform school for young women, she was required to be in attendance at the corporal punishment sessions. She recalls how Gerda, a vindictive and brutal woman, took great pleasure in administering canings in the punishment room, and whipping the miscreants, particularly Sarah, with her favourite implement - the sjambok. Sometimes Gerda would humiliate the women further, sexually.
Miss Sloan does indeed share many of the characteristics of Gerda. When two girls from the school are reported for drinking alcohol in a public house, she takes great pleasure in punishing them. Gypsy is first secured to the spanking horse and lashed fiercely with the strap, followed by 18 cruel strokes of the cane. Shortly after her friend is carried off to recover, Janie gets the same treatment. Gypsy vows revenge on Miss Sloan, and hatches a plan - pictures of two brutally punished bottoms are sent to a government official with demands that action be taken as Miss Sloan has exceeded the permitted punishment regulations, and is in serious violation of the law. When Roger Mayhew turns up at the school, the wheel turns full circle...
