Cousins Della and Maggie take the forbidden inland road in order to be home in time for the ball celebrating Della's forthcoming nuptials. Inadvertently, they stray onto Lord Declan's land, and he in a thoughtless moment, kidnaps Maggie, mistaking her for the bride-to-be. Although she is treated well, Maggie is still a prisoner and thinks that Declan is a barbarian! Losing her temper earns her a sound spanking. She escapes from the castle, only to be caught and returned. It seems that Declan feels a growing attraction for the feisty beauty. Maggie tries on several occasions to tell Declan the truth about who she is. When he finds out another way, he is furious, and takes his revenge in a way which disgusts him. Unable to live with what he has done, Declan risks his life to go to Maggie, offering her marriage to atone. The marriage ceremony takes place, but Maggie's joy soon turns to despair. Time passes, with Maggie and Declan believing themselves hated by the other. It is Maggie who takes the initiative, insisting on punishment. It appears that this strategy is most successful in every respect...
