Summoned to her father's study, nineteen year old Lady Alice is puzzled as to what he might want. He wishes to tell her that their dinner guest will be the thirty-six year old Lord Richard Carmichael to whom Alice was 'promised' many years before. Ignoring her maid's preparations, the tempestuous Alice refuses to marry him and resolves to avoid meeting him at dinner. She rushes to the stables but is caught by the very man she hoped to avoid, and escorted back to the house. Her behaviour earns her a strapping from her father and when she continues to be rude and bad tempered she learns what it is like to be disciplined at the hands of Lord Richard - with whom she is secretly becoming very enamoured. Lord Richard takes over Alice's discipline, and over time tames the headstrong young woman. She makes a particularly stupid mistake with former admirer Philip Mountjoy, which results in another sore bottom. There are many more in the weeks before the wedding, and there will be more during married life - but Alice is well content with her new husband and experiences the heady delights of the marriage bed combined with a well-warmed bottom!
