The Prefects' Court

Our next 'Story of the Day' is The Prefects' Court by Mike from London which has been recommended by LSF member, TheEnglishMaster:

"I highly recommend this classic English schoolgirl story. It deserves a wider audience.
It is a straightforwardly-presented account of a weekly meeting, at the Queen Mary Grammar School for Girls, where the prefects report wrong-doers for punishment. They vote on the fairness of the accusation, then decide the implement, state of dress and number, before carrying out the sentence. Supervised by Deputy Head Mrs Jeffers, on this occasion five girls are lined up outside Classroom 12, awaiting their fate. Inside, new prefect Sarah is anxious because she is reporting a girl for the first time: will her fellow-prefects validate her accusation?
Each punishment (gym shoe and cane) is described in just the right detail, and an unexpected twist sees 18-year-old Sarah humiliated before her peers as she receives six hard stingers with the cane from Mrs Jeffers, with extras.


The style of the third-person narrative is easy and fluent, with characters' thoughts and feelings described sensitively. Its richness of detail gives it an authenticity that makes for a thoroughly good read!"

Synopsis:

Sarah, 18-year-old new prefect at her girl's school, has finally had to report a student for a major rule infraction to the Prefects' Court. If the court does not agree, the prefect receives a caning instead of the accused student. Four other students are also brought up for charges and all punished by the accusing prefect. Sarah, however, proves to be unequal to the task, having never caned before. She learns the consequences of her ignorance first-hand.

If you like stories in a school setting you can't do much better than those of Mike From London. I discovered him years before the LSF existed and he has always been one of my favorite authors.

I agree with tiptopper. Mike is one of the best. This story is one of the best school settings as well.

This author is one of my favorite. I missed this story. Maybe because it was quite long. I will have to read it shortly. It is a shame that he doesn't write any new stories, lately.

I'd never read this before and absolutely loved it. It definitely pushed many of my buttons and made me think a bit, too.

Excellent narration! Your writing is smooth a pleasure to read. Brutal caning of the prefect and uncalled for humiliation by the teacher. When a prefect is first appointed, the head teacher of prefects should train her to cane; this did not happen.
Also, I have never approved of giving students unsupervised power over other students. More often than not student monitors are petty and abusive favoring their friends and punishing the misfits and less popular girls for their own amusement or approval of others.

Thanks for this recommendation. Good to read about a school where anxiety levels are kept satisfactorily high, as anxiety is well known to improve performance!

School stories are quite a challenge. Some sites restrict any spanking stories to adults-only, which means that you're talking solely about upper sixth formers about to go to university which is frankly ridiculous, and other stories like the one recommended incorporate features like a prefects court with powers to inflict corporal punishment - and I'm more than willing to be proved wrong, but I've never heard of such arrangements in real-life girls' schools! Added to which you have people stating that because girls were never smacked in their school or their friends' schools it is all complete fantasy, and as a male writer what would you know about it anyway? Nonetheless I agree that Mike does paint a convincing scenario!

There's nothing wrong with a good fantasy! I've read "The Prefects' Court" and it is an excellent choice for story of the day.
