Great to see a healthy number of comments for last month - especially after the dismal total for February (which was the lowest, believe it or not, since May 2010, when membership was less than a quarter of what it is now). Let's hope this is an ongoing recovery. Keep it up, fellow commenteers!

Let's hope so, but I have a feeling that the upswing is mainly due to the recent Challenge. I hadn't looked at the statistics, but just from the Latest Loaded list I have had a feeling that the number of comments had dropped drastically. Excellent stories by well-established authors may nowadays receive only 5-6 comments where they used to get at least 15-20.

It seems to me that main challenge is to recruit new commenters. People who have been active previously drop out or become less active for a number of reasons, and there are not enough new ones to replace them.

As far as I noticed, the Challenge only added a little over 100 comments to the total, so I'm remaining optimistic. But I totally agree - new commenters are urgently needed! How to encourage them, that's the perennial problem.

The F/M challenge generated 823 comments (as per a check made a few minutes ago).

I find the best way to encourage others to comment is to make sure I comment. I can do nothing about if and when others comment, but I can make sure I do my best in the commenting area.

We have lost Bendover and Barb in the last year or so who were in the top 10 comment providers as per the stats provided. Their absence has made a difference, but all we can do is to strive to follow the example those two set before us.

Comments to the Spanking Library will always increase, if the subject matter interests a lot of us 'spanko's. They may also increase, if the subject matter is controversial.

Interesting. I'd always assumed that comments were added en masse at the end of a Challenge; but from what you say, it seems as if they trickle through to the total while voting is still under way?

The Library total increases each day, but the author's totals do not, I believe. Nor (any more) can an individual story appear with its total on the most commented list until after the challenge ends.

For normal submissions the comment count of the submission and the author's overall totals should increment dynamically at the time the comment is made (or where appropriate, approved). The challenge stories, however, all get initially loaded as 'restricted' which means the various comment totals only get adjusted en masse at the end of the challenge when the status of the submissions is no longer set to restricted.

I've noticed that only one person seems to show "validater" as an additional title in many of these posts. I have often wondered how many of these type volunteers we have here in the library as it seems the obviously invalidated stories are falling vastly behind as the "latest loaded" pages continue to mount. Perhaps a recruitment call might be in order to facilitate more involvement in this arena? I realize this is a tad off topic but overall, personal involvement may be key to participation in other areas. Frankly, I find commenting quite easy and understand the desire for appreciation as well as feel an indebtedness and duty in encouraging an authors work.
