The Winter Solstice will occur at 23.03 GMT this evening (December 21st), after which the days will start to get longer (in the northern hemisphere). The Solstice has been celebrated in this part of the world for at least 5,000 years (and probably longer in other areas) as representing a rebirth, the beginning of a new year. So happy new year to all northern hemisphere readers. (Southern hemisphere readers will probably be bathed in glorious sunshine at the time of the Solstice, so make the most of it, your days are doomed to start getting shorter).

Happy Solstice. May your hemisphere be warm and bright for as long as appropriate. ;)

As we are one hour ahead of the UK, the solstice here was actually 3 minutes after midnight, making December 22nd the shortest day this year. And we still refer to Christmas as Jul (=Yule) as in pre-Christian times.

Now that the rest of the world (or at least those of you in countries using a Gregorian calendar) have caught up, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Be good, and if you can't be good, at least be careful about who you choose to be naughty with.
