It used to be the practice at the circus that the ringmaster when addressing the audience used, "My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen.... " It made the plebs feel equal to their betters for a spell.

I'm still buzzing from opb's choice of examples. Surely you've missed a career teaching English as a second language?

Yes, I didn't know of this order, just picked it up naturally without thinking about it. In French, some adjectives go before the noun, most after (the preceding ones describe beauty, age, greatness and size) and I understand that in French if you had a list of adjectives such as opb came up with, you'd then place some of the preceding ones after the noun as well because having more than one preceding adjective sounds odd.

If I saw such a long list of adjectives in a competition story, however, I'd suspect it was being padded to meet the word count and mark it down accordingly. You have been warned ... oh, too late!
