Stumbled over an historic fact, one showing that there have been spankos throughout history:

LBJ was a character, it is said he frequently conducted business meetings while seated on the porcelain throne, doing his own business. I read a story of a reporter being granted access to do an interview, only to walk in on him being given an enema.

LBJ was one of those individuals who could function perfectly on only 3-4 hours of sleep a night, and supposedly expected the same of his staff. So he was notorious for calling in the middle of the night to discuss policy and would get irritated if you acted like you'd been sleeping.

According to one story I read, LBJ hated long meetings so he made things intentionally uncomfortable to speed things up. He would cram people around a table in a small room and then have the heat cranked up so that pretty soon they just wanted to get the meeting over with and get away. So everyone learned to be brief and to the point and it cut down on long policy squabbles.

And, as stevenr noted, LBJ was lacking in social graces which was quite the shock from the high society JFK.

Didn't Rousseau write an essay, think it was called Emile, advocating submissiveness for women? So he may have been a switch.
Don't know how the stuff about LBJ got in this thread, and since we are not supposed to discuss people politics here will say only this. Lack of social graces does not necessarily make someone a bad leader. And the graceful JFK was supposedly a notorious philanderer. So there you go.

Another off topic bit:
When LBJ got to the white house he was warned not to allow his daughters to be in the elevator alone with a certain senator as the man was known to feel up any woman he was alone with. The elevator doors would close, his hands would go to work, the elevator would stop, the doors would open to reveal a flustered looking woman and an innocent looking Senator Thurmond.

But the past is a different country. They do things differently there.

Goodgulf, here's another Strom Thurmond fact. He was violently opposed to civil rights and racial integration, claiming it would cause racial intermarriage, the big bugaboo for so many Southern whites. Later it came out, not too many years ago, that he had a child by a black mistress.
A more current case might be all those conservative politicians and fundamentalist preachers who denounce honosexuality, then turn out to be closet cases themselves.

Yes, he was a Dixiecrat who became a member of the GOP who felt up teenage girls, stood firm against the mixing of the races while mixing himself, and was re-elected many, many times.

That's the bad out days of politics for you.

And always remember that the past is a different country. They do things differently there.

Strom lived to be 100, proving that only the good die young...
