RosieRad:
Ah well, my math profs never were very good with numbers either. (No, really.)

That's because numbers are not math, they are arithmetic.
I'll show myself out...

But arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers....

No, it's just a basic tool. Branches of math are fields where mathematicians are doing research and producing new knowledge (ie. number theory, complex analysis, algebraic geometry, conformal field theory, etc.).
Just like learning the order of the alphabet is not a branch of linguistics. There are no linguists doing any research and publishing articles on how to memorize the order of the letters.
Also, can I possibly get more insufferable? I don't know, but I'm sure I'll give it my best shot.

Speaking of Pedant...

From http://www.dictionary.com/browse/arithmetic
arithmetic:
the method or process of computation with figures: the ;b]most elementary branch of mathematics.[/b]

Fromhttps://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/arithmetic

Definition of arithmetic
1 a : a branch of mathematics that deals usually with the nonnegative real numbers including sometimes the transfinite cardinals and with the application of the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to them b : a treatise on arithmetic

Which boosters my point of arithmetic being a part of mathematics.

Eeeee, you're totally right! And I was wrong, technically (very technically). OK, let me amend that to say that no mathematician I've ever met refers to number theory as arithmetic nowadays, and especially not in North America. Also let me clarify that I know nothing about number theory (I'm in stats), I just know lots of mathematicians, who do.

Oh, and you meant 'bolsters', not 'boosters'. HaHA! Who's a pedant now??
